According to Statistik Austria, Austrian imports of softwood sawlogs totaled 5.4 million m³ in the months from January to November 2024. Year on year, they were down by 9%. When comparing this latest import volume with those of previous years, there has been an even bigger decrease. As a look in the Datacube shows, imports totaled 6.3 million m³ in the first eleven months of 2022, 6.9 million m³ in the same period of 2021 and nearly 8 million m³ in 2020. An import volume similar to that of the first eleven months of 2024 was last recorded in 2017 (5.6 million m³).

2.5 million m³ of softwood sawlogs were imported from Germany. This is the exact same volume as in the period January to November 2023. Marked decreases, on the other hand, were recorded in purchases from the Czech Republic (1.85 million m³; -16%) and Italy (453,500 m³; -32%). Meanwhile, Austria imported more softwood sawlogs from Slovenia (419,000 m³; +30%). Imports from Hungary (12,000 m³; +137%) and the Netherlands (10,300 m³; +225%) also grew strongly, albeit at a lower level in terms of volumes.
