Last year’s log harvest volume decreased almost 1 million m³ compared to 2023 and is 4% below the five-year average. According to the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), 79% (47.6 million m³) of the wood was harvested in non-industrial private forests. This corresponds to a 3% decrease compared to 2023. At the same time, logging in state forests and forests managed by the timber industry increased by 4% to 12.5 million m³.
28 million m³ of sawlogs and 32 million m³ of logs for industrial use were harvested. Pine was the dominating species with a logging volume of 28.1 million m³, followed by spruce (23.4 million m³) and hardwood (8.7 million m³). When it comes to wood for energy generation, the harvest volume decreased by 22% to 5.8 million m³, of which 55% were debarked logs and whole trees.
In December 2024, 4.9 million m³ were harvested in Finland according to Luke, with sawlogs and wood for industrial use accounting for around half each. The share of wood for energy generation was 383,000 m³.
