The average price for standing spruce trees from non-industrial private forests without fully mechanized harvesting techniques was €74.8/m³ last year, while that of pine trees was €70.7/m³. Buyers paid €57.6/m³ for birch logs in standing sales, i.e. 12% more than in 2022. In delivery sales, €70.1/m³ were paid, which corresponds to a 17% increase.

The sales price for standing pulpwood rose to €27.5/m³ for spruce, €25.1/m³ for pine and €25.9/m³ for birch. Year-on-year, prices have increased within a range from 18 to 23%. The average purchase price for pulpwood reached €45.7/m³ for birch, to €45.6/m³ for spruce and to €44.1/m³ for pine, as the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) reports. Compared to the same period of last year, increases of 16 to 18% were recorded.

According to Luke, a total of 41.3 million m³ of industrial wood from non-industrial private forests were sold in 2023. Standing sales accounted for 89% and sales of felled trees free forest road for the remaining 11%. 50% of the wood sold was pulpwood, while logs and kindling accounted for 48% and special wood for 2% of the total timber trade. In terms of volume, log wood trade saw a decrease of 3% compared to 2022, while trade in industrial wood increased by 1%. The total trading volume fell by 1% compared to the previous year and was therefore 3% below the average of the past five years.
