Austria

130,000 m³ less softwood logs imports than in 2022

Article by Philipp Matzku | 08.10.2023 - 14:13

Of the top 10 importers of spruce logs, only the import volumes from the Czech Republic (1.45 million m3; –29%) and Switzerland (47,400 m3; –10%) to Austria declined year-on-year.

In all other eight countries, delivery volumes increased, in some cases significantly, compared to the same period of the previous year. Austria imported 1.47 million m3 from Germany from January to July 2022. According to Statistics Austria, imports this year were 6% higher than last year's figure at 1.56 million m3.
Austria also recorded a significant increase in imports of logs from Italy with 113% to 430,000 m3. In the first seven months, imports from Slovakia amounted to 63,000 m3. In the same period of the previous year, these were still quoted at 5,600 m3. That's an increase of 1028%. At 51,900 m3 (+709%), volumes from Poland were also significantly higher than in the previous year.

Imports of needlesaw logs from Sweden are very stable at 36,700 m3 (+1%).
