Spruce at record levels

In March, the producer price index for spruce logs was at 107.1% (2015 = 100%), i.e. 3.8 percentage points higher than in February and 7.6 percentage points higher than in the same month of last year. The index had reached its previous all-time high, that is 106.6%, in October 2022. Spruce cuttings, B, saw a slight month-on-month increase of 0.2%, bringing the index value to 118.3%. Year on year, this producer price index was up by 13.1 points (March 2022: 105.2%). Previously, the highest value was 117.2% recorded in December 2022.

According to Destatis, the hardwood producer price indices remained exactly the same compared to the previous month. In March, the oak log price index was at 149.1%, while that of beech logs was at 140.7%. Both index values remained unchanged at the all-time high of February. Year on year, the oak and beech log price indices recorded increases of 22.7 points (March 2022: 126.4%) and 35.2 points (March 2022: 105.5%), respectively.
