40% decrease in softwood log imports

In the first five months of 2022, China imported 12.1 million m³ of softwood logs, that is 39% less than in the same period of last year. According to China Customs Statistics, 20 million m³ were imported in 2021.

Shipments from New Zealand and Germany accounted for 73% or 8.9 million m³ of total Chinese imports this year. Purchases of softwood logs from New Zealand fell by 18% to 6.5 million m³, while shipments from Germany were down by 53%, reaching only 2.4 million m³. Double-digit decreases were also recorded in imports from the US (580,000 m³; -43%) and Canada (446,000 m³; -23%).

Latvia is once again the only supplying country which saw its shipments to China increase compared to 2021 (168,000 m³; +496%).
