40% decrease in softwood log imports

From January to May, Chinese softwood log imports fell by 7.9 million m³ compared to the same period of last year. Nearly three quarters were imported from the two main supplying countries New Zealand and Germany.

In the first five months of 2022, China imported 12.1 million m³ of softwood logs, that is 39% less than in the same period of last year. According to China Customs Statistics, 20 million m³ were imported in 2021.

Shipments from New Zealand and Germany accounted for 73% or 8.9 million m³ of total Chinese imports this year. Purchases of softwood logs from New Zealand fell by 18% to 6.5 million m³, while shipments from Germany were down by 53%, reaching only 2.4 million m³. Double-digit decreases were also recorded in imports from the US (580,000 m³; -43%) and Canada (446,000 m³; -23%).

Latvia is once again the only supplying country which saw its shipments to China increase compared to 2021 (168,000 m³; +496%).
