Most of the log wood, i.e. 73.6 million m³, was used as raw material. 64.5 million sm³ were domestic logs and 9.1 million sm³ were imported. According to the Natural Resource Institute Finland (Luke), the overall log consumption of the forestry industry increased by 6% compared to the previous year.

10.8 million sm³ of logs, and thus a stable volume compared to last year, were used for energy generation. 6.5 million sm³ were used as firewood for small furnaces, and 4.3 million m³ as wood chips in heat and power plants.

In 2018, a total of 25.8 million m³ of byproducts from the forestry and timber industry, such as sawmill waste and sawdust, were processed, 9.7 million m³ of which were used for the production of forestry products. As to energy generation, heat and power plants consumed 3.1 million m³ of various types of forest residues (wood waste and stumps) and 12.5 million m³ of forestry byproducts and other industrial wood residues (mostly industrial wood chips, sawdust and bark).
