The Austrian Binderholz Group takes over 100% of the shares in Vapo Timber from Vapo which includes the sawmills in Lieksa and Nurmes as of the beginning of January 2016. The two locations are in North Karelia (Central/Eastern Finland) with a combined 2015 output of approximately 400,000 m³ of sawn timber and a workforce of 100 employees, all of which will be taken over by the Austrians. As a company, Binderholz will thus expand the production capacity of its sawmills from currently 1.2 million to 1,7 million m³/yr.

The main reason for this move is to gain access to spruce and pine roundwood of highest quality, a Binderholz representative said. In addition, the two sawmills have a good technical standard and there is ample room for future expansion.

The Lieksa mill specializes in spruce. The annual production capacity in two shifts is specified to be 325,000 m³, the drying capacity to be 250,000 m³/yr. Nurmes is a pine sawmill. The two-shift cutting capacity is 264,000 m³ and the drying capacity approximately 200,000 m³.

The Finnish log provider Harvestia has guaranteed wood supply, including felling and the entire timber logistics. The company harvests around 2.5 million of sm³ a year and not only supplies sawmills but also a pulp mill. Most of the wood comes from Finland, small amounts from Russia.

The purchase agreement was recently signed and is subject to approval by the supervisory authorities, Binderholz stated in a press release. The purchase price was not disclosed. The deal is expected to be completed in January.

This step is of great importance for Binderholz, the company empasizes in the statement. It sets important milestones for taking on new high-quality wood products and for entering new markets, it says. A considerable amount of the company’s lumber will be converted into glued solid wood products at Binderholz locations in Austria and Bavaria, the media report reveals.

Currently, both sawmill locations undergo technical optimization to prepare for consecutive investments in further processing and in expanding value-added production. The sawmills will operate under the name of Binderholz Nordic. The company will be incorporated into the Binder Group, the management, markets and products will be restructured. As a result of the acquisition, it is anticipated that sales of the Binder Holz Group will rise by around € 100 million to € 500 million this year.
