Gerald Schweighofer, founder and CEO of Holzindustrie Schweighofer, has refuted allegations of being ready to process illegaly sourced timber in his mills. In reaction to a video secretly shot by an alleged supplier that caught widespread attention in the internet, he addressed the online-community in a 3-minute-video posted on YouTube.com himself. In it he argues that he would "never put Romanian woods at risk be using illegal methods", simply because "wood is our livelihood." He also said his company holds PEFC and FSC certificates which he was committed to adhere to. Even though forestry laws in Romania allow for timber from National Parks to be harvested and processed to a certain extent, he refuses to accept any of it. No logs without reliable documents proofing their legality will be unloaded on Schweighofer’s premises, the CEO emphasizes in the video.
Schweighofer conceded that he has suspended the member of staff in question "until the full facts have been established".
