New pellet mills, growing capacities, and changes in ownership

Article by Philipp Matzku (translated by Eva Guzely) | 29.10.2025 - 11:03

According to research done by the Holzkurier, pellet production capacity in Germany will total approximately 5.4 million t in 2025, compared to just under 5 million t in 2024. Target production output increased by 600,000 t year on year to 3 million t. In Austria, pellet production capacity was 1.8 million t in 2024. For 2025, an output of just under 2 million t is planned. Total production capacity is 2.8 million t this year. In Switzerland, capacity is projected at 526,000 t in 2025 and pellet production output at approximately 375,000 t (2024: 347,000 t).

Only companies from the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) that disclosed their production figures were included in the calculations. Companies without known production figures were not taken into account.

New pellet mills

In the first quarter of 2025, Hermann Keller, Achern/DE, commissioned its pellet mill with an annual capacity of 60,000 t a year, including a 6.6-MW combined heat and power plant. HILO Holzindustrie Losheim, Losheim/DE (120,000 t/yr), followed in the spring. Ladenburger will put its pellet mill in Kerkingen/DE (capacity: 160,000 t/yr) into operation by the end of the year. The Josef Ziegler sawmill, Stein bei Plößberg/DE, has been producing pellets for in-house energy supply since the summer of 2025. Similar projects were previously carried out by Xaver Bullinger, Abtsgmünd/DE, in 2023 (9,000 t/yr) and Lignotrend, Weilheim/DE, in 2024 (30,000 t/yr). HIH-Holzindustrie Hagenow, Hagenow/DE, increased its capacity by half to 75,000 t a year.

In Austria, Tilly Holzindustrie, Althofen, started production in the first quarter of 2024 (100,000 t/yr). Johann Pabst Holzindustrie, Zeltweg, doubled its pellet production output in 2024, to 120,000 t/yr. A new saw line was commissioned at the Pabst site in Obdach in the same year as part of an investment program. Ennstal Pellets relocated its production from Reichraming to Lainbach and opened a new pellet mill at its headquarters. Theurl Holz, Assling, plans to ramp up its pellet production in the fourth quarter of 2025 as part of the expansion of its planing mill and glulam plant. The capacity is said to be 80,000 t a year.

In Switzerland, the pellet mills of Resurses, Savognin (10,000 t/yr), and Pelleticino, Biasca (2,500 t/yr), went into operation in 2024. Following the fire in 2023, Matterhorn Pellets, Zermatt/CH, resumed production at a low level of 30,000 t a year in the summer of 2024.

In late January 2025, Rettenmeier Holzindustrie acquired the pellet mill in Pressath/DE from the insolvent Ziegler Group and will produce up to 200,000 t a year of pellets there – significantly less than the Ziegler Group’s target output. The four German Leag mills (total capacity: 500,000 t/yr) have been operating under the name Leag Pellets since the end of 2024. By the end of this year, the site in Eberswalde/DE, with its capacity of 50,000 t a year, will change owners: from 1Heiz Pellets (Amandus Kahl Group) to Kreiswerke Barnim. The Swiss pellet mill in Küssnacht am Rigi (50,000 t/yr) was sold to energy group EBL Energie Rigi in February 2025.

The insolvency proceedings for the Gustav Hassel wood processing plant in Stockum-Plüschen/DE, which were opened in 2024, have now been concluded, and the company continues to operate under the name Holzindustrie Hassel. Its annual pellet production capacity is 55,000 t.
