According to the DEPI, 6 tonnes of loose, ENplus A1-quality wood pellets cost on average €380.2/t in Germany in March. This corresponds to an increase of 4.7% compared to the previous month (February: €363.2/t) and of 29% compared to March 2024 (€296.2/t). One kilowatt-hour of heat from pellets costs 7.6 cents. Thus, pellets are 17% cheaper than heating oil.
“Many consumers no longer order pellets before or after the heating season. This led to a marked increase in demand in the short term, which the market was not prepared for,” Bentele explains and adds: “Even though it was not an extremely cold winter, the consistently low temperatures resulted in constant demand for heating. This led to a sharp increase in demand for wood pellets, especially in January. At the moment, the market situation is easing again.”
In March, the German Pellets Institute reports the following prices for 6 tonnes of pellets: €374.5/t in the north and east of Germany, €375.6/t in central Germany, and €381.5/t in the south of the country. For 26 tonnes of wood pellets, buyers pay €360.1/t in central Germany, €365.2/t in the south, and €365.6/t in the north and east of the country.
