German pellet price above last year’s level

Article by Philipp Matzku (translated by Eva Guzely) | 21.02.2025 - 10:56

In Austria, the neutral pellet price (without VAT, transport and handling costs) is at €234.6/t in February, up by €10.6/t compared to January, but down by €13.3/t or 5% compared to February 2024.

In the DACH region, the German pellet price saw the biggest month-on-month increase, of €39.9/t, and reached €251.1/t in February 2025. In the same month of 2024, the pellets still cost €216.8/t in Germany. Since then, the price has risen by €34.3/t or 16%. According to the German Wood Fuel and Pellets Association (DEPV) and the Association of the German Sawmill and Timber Industry, the main reasons for this sharp increase are increased demand from end consumers due to the cold winter on the one hand and the lower supply of raw materials in Germany on the other. In previous years, consumers often made only one purchase per season. This winter, however, there is an increase in reorders. In addition, the availability of sawmill byproducts is limited because the sawmill industry has reduced its overall cutting in 2024 – more so in central Germany than in the south of the country.

In Switzerland, a neutral pellet price of €330.5/t is recorded in February. Month on month, it increased by €14.3/t. Year on year, on the other hand, the pellet price decreased by €8.4/t or 3% (January 2024: €338.9/t).

Last year, the German pellet price was rather low. Now, it is close to a level that is normal for the season.
