Despite a corona-related increase in demand, wood pellets continue to be cheaper than fossil fuels and with the price being at 245.94 €/ton in April, they are also cheaper than in the month before. Compared to March, the price fell by 4.2% when a quantity of 6 tons is bought. This is according to the German Wood Fuel and Pellets Association (DEPV).

The saving on fuel oil is at 4.8% and at 22% on natural gas. A recent survey among 66 pellet merchants and producers, who have ENplus certification, confirms the security of supply even during the corona crisis, as the DEPV reports.

In April, the following regional differences can be observed in Germany (quantity: 6 tons): In the South, pellets cost 243.41 €/ton and are cheapest, as it was the case in March. Northern and Eastern Germany follow with a price of 245.68 €/ton. In Central Germany, pellets cost 246.15 €/ton.

Bigger quantities (26 tons) are sold at the following prices in April: South: 230.01 €/ton, Center: 227.12 €/ton, North/East: 228.37 €/ton (prices incl. VAT).

“Spring marks the start of the first special offers for pellet storage which is reflected in considerably lower prices,” explains DEPV managing director Martin Bentele. “Two thirds of interviewed merchants and producers currently do not see a negative impact of the corona pandemic on pellet supply.” Companies’ warehouses are well-stocked due to a high supply of raw material. Logistics are the only area where some merchants expect slight limitations if employees become ill. On the other hand, time can be saved thanks to rather empty roads.
