As Rainforest Alliance announced on its website, the suspension of the FSC certificate for Swedwood Karelia was lifted. The validity of the certificate issued to the Ikea subsidiary which involves some 300,000 hectares of forest in the Russian Karelia region had been suspended as of October 2013. The reason: In the Swedwood annual audit of 2013, non-conformities to FSC standards had been found.

Swedwood then launched a formal complaint against the suspension arguing that four of the six non-conformities should have been classified as minor and two were not justified at all. Rainforest Alliance convened an independent commission, which in its final report basically endorsed Swedwood’s point of view.
