Housing construction starts at the highest level since 2007

After a weak start of the year, the number of housing construction starts in Japan rose sharply in March and reached the highest level since 2007. Month on month, an increase of 48% was recorded. Year on year, they were up by 39%.

In January and February, housing construction starts were still at a historically low level. In March, however, Statistics of Japan reported a marked increase in construction activity. 89,000 housing starts are the highest level in this particular month since 2007. Compared to March 2024, the number increased by around 25,000 units or 39%.

Thus, in the first quarter of 2025, construction started on a total of 206,000 housing units, which corresponds to a year-on-year increase of 13%. The last time Japan recorded more housing construction starts in a first quarter was in 2019 (216,000 units).
