According to Destatis, softwood lumber production (incl. planed timber) decreased by 9% or more than 2 million m³ year on year, totaling just under 20.4 million m³ in 2025. In 2024, German companies still produced 22.4 million m³ of softwood lumber. The biggest volume Germany has produced in a full year was recorded in 2021 (25.3 million m³).
In the fourth quarter of 2025, output totaled 4.7 million m³ and was thus down by 9%, or around 470,000 m³, compared to the same period last year. It was the lowest quarterly volume produced in the past ten years. The weakest three-month period of the past decade was the first quarter of 2016 with an output of 4.9 million m³.
