Austria in particular stands out. With a volume of around 1.51 million m³, it not only remained Italy’s number one supplier by far; according to Eurostat, it also increased its softwood lumber exports to Italy by around 179,000 m³, or +14%. This brings Austria’s market share to over 56%.
Germany remains stable in second place with a trade volume of 350,000 m³, but only a slight increase of +0.6% compared to 2024. Its market share is around 13%.
Finland has seen a more dynamic development, with Italy importing 172,000 m³, i.e. 22% more, in the first seven months. As a result, Finland now holds a market share of over 6%. This is particularly remarkable given that Finland did not export any softwood lumber at all to Italy up until ten years ago.
Overall, shifts in favor of individual Northern European countries can be observed, while some Central European suppliers are becoming somewhat less important. Austria remains the dominant market player, accounting for over half of Italy’s softwood lumber imports, and has even further expanded its position.
As always, you can find the detailed development of Italian softwood lumber imports in the Datacube.
