Since its establishment in 1946, Malå Såg has been an established sawmill in northern Sweden. The company specializes in high-quality products made of Nordic pine, which are exported worldwide, primarily to Norway, Sweden, Japan, the United Kingdom, and North Africa. Malå plays an important role in the regional value chain by supplying sawmill by-products to the pulp industry and local bioenergy producers.
By sourcing and processing softwood logs from sustainably managed Swedish forests, this acquisition represents a valuable addition to HS Timber Group’s portfolio of high-quality wood products. The group’s collaboration with Swedish state-owned forestry company Sveaskog lays the foundation for a long-term partnership focused on sustainable value creation from first-class raw materials.
“With the acquisition of Malå Såg, we are strengthening our presence in Northern Europe and continuing our commitment to sustainable wood processing. Malå Såg’s highly qualified employees and heritage complement our strategy of producing high-quality wood products while supporting local economies and sustainable forestry,” Jürgen Bergner, CEO of HS Timber Group, comments
Once the current investment program is completed, Malå Såg will have an annual production capacity of up to 340,000 m³ of kiln-dried and further processed lumber, including planed products, decking, cladding, and slats. HS Timber Group will retain all of Malå Såg’s current employees and, going forward, plans to continuously develop and improve the sawmill site together with the local management team.
“We are pleased that Malå Såg will continue to grow under the ownership of HS Timber Group. The sawmill has a strong team and a proud history, and we are confident that this step will ensure its continued success and contribution to the local community. The divestment is expected to contribute to Setra’s ability to further strengthen its position in central Sweden,” Marcus Westdahl, CEO of Setra Group, stated.
This is HS Timber Group’s third acquisition this year. In early January, the company took over Latvian sawmill Vika Wood. Just a few weeks later, HS Timber announced the acquisition of the Kurekss sawmill, also in Latvia. With the takeover of Malå Såg and the aforementioned lumber production, HS Timber is expected to exceed the 3-million-m³/yr-mark, operating a total of eight sawmills now. The group could move up to fourth place among Europe’s Top 20 sawmills next year.
