Revamped sales indicator

Article by Raphael Kerschbaumer (translated by Eva Guzely) | 05.02.2025 - 10:56

The “Sales Indicator 2.0” has been adapted to the current economic framework conditions. Now, it provides a more precise and stable representation of the general sentiment in the timber industry, which has undergone major changes over the years. February 2023 was determined as the new base index (100%) as it appeared to be a particularly suitable month in terms of both prices and the relationship between supply and demand in recent years.

Up to date with the modern age

As is the case with every market and industry, there have been changes in the timber industry as well: Some of them were smaller, while others were bigger and more impactful. For example, new products like cross-laminated timber have gained in importance over the past decade, whereas others, such as raw planed timber in Italy, are no longer of much relevance to Central European softwood lumber producers. Delivery destinations and the degrees of processing have also changed in recent years. Instead of fresh lumber with delivery to the border included, most exports to Italy now include delivery to Milan.

Furthermore, the overseas market USA has become much more important for many domestic sawmills. Here, we rely on the US east coast prices that emerge from our price surveys.

Expanded product range

Apart from pellet prices, all prices are researched by the Holzkurier’s editorial team. Several price trends, for example for log wood or glue-laminated timber, have been established for years. Over several months now, our editorial team has also been researching prices for cross-laminated timber or CE roof slats. In September 2024, we also introduced a precise and reliable price trend for European lumber exported to the US.
