Italy with a slight decrease in lumber imports

Article by Raphael Kerschbaumer (translated by Eva Guzely) | 17.01.2025 - 09:12

A look in the Datacube shows a cumulative import volume of 3.38 million m³ in the months from January to October 2024, which is exactly the average of the past decade. In that period, Italy imported an average of around 3.37 million m³ of softwood lumber and planed timber.

Compared to the first ten months of 2023, however, a decrease of nearly 3% was recorded, which is distributed more or less evenly among all supplying countries. Main supplier Austria delivered a nearly constant volume of 1.87 million m³ (-1%) to Italy. A downward trend can be observed mostly in imports from Eastern Europe, for example the Czech Republic (170,000 m³; -9%) or Poland (91,000 m³; -29%). Figures published by Eurostat show that those decreases were compensated for by additional volumes imported from France (72,000 m³; +39%) and Switzerland (71,000 m³; +32%), among others.
