The new sawmill is designed for the processing of regional pine species (Pinus taeda and Pinus elliottii). The log wood comes from sustainably managed plantations in the region. Thanks to the favorable climate, which allows the pines to grow 365 days a year, the log wood can be harvested after less than 20 years.
In the current stage of expansion, the sawmill has an annual production capacity of 370,000 m³ of dry lumber. According to the company, most of the lumber produced there is exported to North and Central America, to the Middle East and Asia.
A secondary sorting system with a quality scanner and a planer are connected to the sawmill. The sawmill by-products can be further processed into pellets, the current annual capacity being 132,000 t. The ENplus-certified pellets are then shipped to Europe for use as domestic fuel.
Two 20 MW boilers fueled by accumulating bark and locally sourced biomass are used to generate the necessary heat to dry the lumber and sawmill by-products.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the greenfield project took place in January 2022. In December 2023, trial operation started and the sawmill was gradually ramped up. Acon Timber currently employs 315 people. Including upstream and downstream sectors, the sawmill is estimated to have created over 700 jobs in total.
