Cutting in German hardwood sawmills which reported their quantities amounted to around 1.578 million m³ of logs in 2020. Compared to previous years, the overall volume remained stable (+0.2% compared to 2019) despite the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. In Germany, around 1.575 million m³ were cut in 2019, and in 2018, companies reported a total cutting volume of 1.577 million m³. Pollmeier Massivholz is by far the biggest company. Both in Aschaffenburg and Creuzburg, it cut 325,000 m³ of logs in 2020, and in Malchow 140,000 m³ were cut. Pollmeier reports a total of 790,000 m³, which is exactly half of the overall hardwood cutting reported in Germany.
Following in second and third place in the ranking of German hardwood sawmills are Franz Obermeier in Schwindegg with 100,000 m³ and Abalon Hardwood in Schwalmstadt with 80,000 m³. While Pollmeier and Abalon specialize in the cutting of beech logs only, Obermeier also cuts oak and ash logs.
Of all the companies which reported their 2020 figures, there are eleven more sawmills which cut 20,000 m³ or more last year. According to information provided by the companies themselves, they reached 325,000 m³ in 2020 and plan to raise cutting to 338,000 m³ in 2021.
17 hardwood sawmills fall in the category of 10,000 to 20,000 m³ of annual cutting. In 2020, they cut a total of 243,600 m³ of logs and this year, the volume is to grow by 10% to 268,000 m³.
In Austria, hardwood cutting totaled 282,300 m³ last year, as figures show. In 2019, 280,800 m³ had been reported. In 2021, cutting is to increase by around 2% to 287,500 m³.
With 70,000 m³, Abalon Hardwood is Austria’s biggest hardwood sawmill, followed by EPH of Frauental with 35,000 m³ (based on cutting figures in 2020). Frey-Amon in Hetzmannsdorf, Wibeba in Wieselburg and Wimmer Holz in Kuchl are all in third place with an annual cutting volume of 17,000 m³ each. Seven of the companies which reported their figures cut between 10,000 and 20,000 m³ of logs last year. In 2020, a total of 99,000 m³ were processed and this year, the volume is to reach 137,000 m³.
