Currently, there is a lumber shortage in the US which is the result of production curtailments in Canada, logistic difficulties due to COVID-19 and a DIY and renovation boom in Canada as well as in the United States. In part, Canadian lumber does not reach the US market anymore because it is needed in Canada and sold at good prices.

This has repercussions on prices. According to the Wall Street Journal, Lumber Futures soared by more than 85% since April 1st. In the same period, Holzkurier identified a 36% increase in 2-by-4 prices in the east of the US. From week 26 to week 27 alone, prices rose by 7% or 35 US-$/1000 bft.

European exporters now earn 293 €/m³ with 2-by-4. This is 20 €/m³ more than in the last week of June. Compared to last year, prices rose by 28 €/m³.
