Already in July 2023, the Mondi Group announced its plans to acquire West Fraser’s pulp mill in Hinton, in the province of Alberta/CA. The mill is said to have an annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes. As Mondi reports, the production site was acquired “for a total consideration of US-$5 million”. Once the necessary permits are obtained, Mondi wants to invest around €400 million in the mill, primarily in a new kraft paper machine with a capacity of 200,000 tonnes a year.

“We would like to thank our dedicated employees, the community of Hinton, and the Government of Alberta for their efforts in helping close this transaction,” Sean McLaren, President and CEO of West Fraser, commented. “The future of the Hinton Pulp mill is bright.” West Fraser will continue to support the mill through a long-term log supply agreement.
