Forests in Sweden’s Dalarna and Gävleborg regions were hardest hit, with the affected area stretching from Norrbotten to northern Uppland.

According to preliminary assessments, approximately three quarters of the trees have been uprooted and one quarter were snapped by the storms. Most of the damage is observed in recently thinned stands and areas designated for regeneration.

Skogsstyrelsen emphasizes that the assessment of the volume of damaged wood is currently hampered by heavy snowfall. Storm Anna, in particular, brought up to one meter of snow to the affected areas. More precise figures will be available in about six weeks. According to Swedish forest law, forest owners have to inform the Swedish Forest Agency of any harvesting activities on areas larger than 0.5 hectares, even after a calamity.
