At 17.8 million m³, the 2024 harvest volume was almost equal to the volumes of the pre-calamity years. For comparison, the ten-year average in the years from 2006 to 2015 was 16 million m³ a year. In 2025, it is expected that a total of around 16 million m³ will be harvested. At a projected 6 million m³, the volume of damaged wood could even be below the long-term average of 7 million m³ (2006 to 2015). The figures for 2024 were published in the forest protection report of the Forestry and Game Management Research Institute (FGMRI) in Jílovište.
The decline in the harvest of log wood – especially spruce log wood – in the Czech Republic is having a direct impact on the Austrian sawmill industry. Since their peak in 2021, log imports have decreased steadily. In 2023, Germany again became the most important supplier. In the first five months of 2021, 2 million m³ were delivered from the Czech Republic to Austria. This year, imports totaled only 800,000 m³ (five-year average 2021-2025: 1.2 million m³). During the same period, Austria received 1.1 million m³ from Germany (five-year average: 1.2 million m³).
