New Zealand remains China’s most important supplier of softwood logs, having shipped 3,75 million m³, or 13% more, to the Far Eastern country. Germany follows in second place even though imports have fallen by 23% to 1.1 million m³ in the first three months. Poland, which barely made it in the Top 10 with a total of 532,179 m³ in the full year 2022, rose to third place with 326,000 m³ and is now China’s third biggest supplier of softwood lumber behind New Zealand and Germany.

Imports from the US fell by 23% or 95,000 m³ year on year to 310,500 m³ in the first quarter of 2023. A similar development can be seen in shipments coming from Japan and Canada. They fell by 10% to 223,000 m³ and by 20% to 220,000 m³, respectively. The Czech Republic recorded a decrease of more than 50%, which brought the total down to 85,000 m³, while Chinese imports from Latvia rose by 50% to 113,000 m³.
