The countries which are mainly affected by the bark beetle calamity in Central Europe, i.e. Germany and the Czech Republic, are the drivers of this development.
In the first eight months, Germany exported 4.6 million m³, which is 202% more than last year, according to data published by China Customs Statistics. And the flow of German log wood keeps growing. This year, Germany shipped an average of 570,000 m³ a month to China. In July alone, exports were at 890,000 m³.
The Czech Republic already sold more than 2 million m³ to China so far. This corresponds to an increase of 115% year on year. However, contrary to Germany, the Czech Republic saw its shipments decrease. While monthly exports were at an average of 570,000 m³ so far, in July “only” 332,000 m³ were exported to China. As of yet, it is not known whether this has something to do with the more restrictive measures introduced by the Chinese customs authorities.
Other important supplying countries recorded a negative development this year. New Zealand remains China’s number one supplier. However, with 9.3 million m³, volumes decreased considerably compared to last year (-21%). Russian shipments fell by 27% to 3.1 million m³ in the first eight months.
