In 2023, Germany imported a total of 462,400 t of wood pellets. In one year, imports have decreased by 19% or 87,000 t. Purchases from Denmark grew by 14%, from 101,000 t in 2023 to 115,000 t in 2024. Last year, a new record level was reached. In fact, Germany has not imported such a large quantity of pellets from its neighbor in the north since 2009.
Imports from the US were down by 19% and amounted to 77,200 t. Smaller quantities of pellets were also imported from Belgium (48,200 t; -5%), Poland (43,200 t; -40%), Ukraine (27,400 t; -28%) and Austria (17,700 t; -30%). The timeline in the Datacube shows that delivery volumes have seen a constant decrease since 2017 (115,100 t).
Of the Top 10 supplying countries, France (6,700 t; +332%) and China (4,800 t; +381%) were the only ones to see their trade volumes increase. Delivery volumes from China have only reached noteworthy levels since 2023 (1,000 t).
In 2018 (375,000 t), Germany imported nearly the same quantity of pellets as last year. Back then, Poland was the main supplier with a trade volume of 98,000 t, followed by Denmark with 70,700 t.
