Stora Enso, Helsinki/FI, recently acquired a 100% stake in Virdia for 24 million. The US-based developer of technology for the production of sugars and lignins from cellulosic biomass is to increase Stora Enso's expertise in biorefining. "This acquisition is in line with our growth strategy in the field of bio-based materials and chemicals", says Juan Carlos Bueno, Vice President of Stora Enso Biomaterials.
In 2025, Austria imported around 200,000 t of wood pellets. The Czech Republic and Germany were the most important suppliers. Since 2021, imports have more than halved, though.
