From January to October, housing construction starts in Japan amounted to 714,700 units, which corresponds to a 5% increase compared to the same period of 2020 (678,900 units). In comparison with 2019, however, housing starts saw a 6% decrease (2019: 759,400 units).
In October, housing starts were above the level of the pre-pandemic year of 2019 for the first time (2019: 77,100 units). This is according to Statistics of Japan.
