In the first eight months of 2021, just under 12 million m³ of softwood lumber arrived in China. This year, the East Asian country only imported around 11 million m³. Shipments from main supplying country Russia remained nearly constant at 7.7 million m³, while imports from Canada, China’s second most important supplier, increased by 37%, from 621,000 m³ in 2021 to around 850,000 m³ this year.
Marked decreases were recorded in import volumes from Chile, Brazil and the other supplying countries. Shipments from Chile were down by 42% to 190,000 m³. Brazil only sold 140,000 m³ to China, which is 62% less than in the first eight months of last year. Imports from the other supplying countries fell by 45% to 385,000 m³. This is according to official data published by China Customs Statistics.
