US imports on the decrease lately

Article by Gerd Ebner (translated by Eva Guzely) | 08.11.2021 - 08:56

Monthly imports have been decreasing since May. This correlates perfectly with the development of prices which started to fall back then. In August and September, import volumes were below last year’s level.

In the first three quarters, 24.4 million m³ of softwood lumber (+9%) were imported from Canada. The European supplying countries, most of all Germany with a 33% increase and 1.5 million m³ overall, saw shipping volumes increase substantially this year. US imports from Sweden remained stable at 480,000 m³.

Romania, to be precise HS Timber, recorded the biggest increase: With a total of 380,000 m³ in nine months, the country’s exports to the US were up by 155%.

According to US statistics, imports from Austria rose by 47% to 330,000 m³. Data published by Statistik Austria, however, show falling exports until the end of July.
