US market as volatile as ever

Also in 2019, the US market is an extremely volatile market. This is exemplified by assortment 2-by-4 free Great Lakes region: In calendar week 1, the year started out with a price level of €227/m³ for European exporters. Until mid-February, the value gained €42/m³ to a level of €269/m³. The reason for this was dealers worrying about supply: Canadian sawmills drastically curbed production in the 4Q and large amounts of snow impeded transport.

Two weeks later, however, rain and snow cooled down demand so much that the price fell €14/m³ again. The current level is only €260/m³ which is €69/m³ short of last year's level. The margin between 2019 and 2018 has not yet been larger.
