The euphoric mood of a still very young and relatively small sector was very noticeable at the Mass Timber Conference in Portland. More than one thousand CLT experts and interested parties were... Read more ...
It is expected that three years from now, the number 1 and 2 producers will still be the same two companies: Binderholz and Stora Enso. Both are likely to increase their production capacity until then. Binderholz announced another expansion of their site in Burgbernheim, without yet specifying the projected extent. Stora Enso is to decide until the beginning of July whether a third site of 75,000 m³/yr will be implemented or not.
Third place, in theory, goes to Legal & General: The British enterprise has ordered the world's biggest CLT press with the dimensions 20 by 6 m. This press is designed for a capacity of 120,000 m³/yr when running in one-shift operation. The three Austrian enterprises KLH, which is the new Pfeifer Holz site in Lauterbach/DE, Hasslacher Norica Timber and Mayr-Melnhof occupy places 4 through 7 in Europe.
The total European CLT production of last year reached around 670,000 m³. Considering a simplified comparison of this figure with the European demand in 2016 and assuming a market growth rate of 15% for the years 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 - an estimation that industry insiders deem quite realistic - a theoretical demand of 1.2 million m³/yr is the result. This would precisely match the production volume precalculated by Timber-Online (see table; currently known projects as at June 2017).
