According to the Federal Statistical Office and the German Pellet Institute, 87.4% or 2.039 million tons of the wood pellets which were used as fuel in Germany last year came from domestic production. This means that only 12.6%, i.e. 293,000 tons, needed to be imported. Germany’s neighboring countries account for the lion’s share of overall imports, that is for 9.9% (231,000 t). Around 55,000 tons (2.3%) were imported from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.
