The largest share of the global production still comes from Europe contributing 40% (22 million t). In North America, 27% of pellets are produced, in China 20%. The annual pellets consumption in Asia is 11 million t, in the United States 3 million t.
The report further shows that pellets utilization in Central and Eastern Europe is increasing significantly. Ukraine even saw an increase of 25% in 2016, as indicated in the statistical handbook of the European Biomass Association (AEBIOM).
With regards to certification, more than 9 million t pellets with the ENplus seal of quality were produced globally in 2017. Germany is top producer of certified pellets followed by Austria (1 million t).
